The Vice Chancellor of Trinity University, Lagos, Professor Clement Kolawole, has called on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to channel excess revenue generated from candidates applying for admission into tertiary institutions directly to Nigerian universities.
Kolawole made the call in a statement released on Wednesday by the institution’s Principal Assistant Registrar, Michael Bamigbola.
He argued that funds generated from the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) should be reinvested into the university system to support research, infrastructure, and other academic needs, rather than being remitted entirely to the federal government.
Kolawole also reiterated his position that students in private universities should benefit from the National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and that private institutions should be eligible for interventions from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). Describing the current exclusion of private university students as discriminatory, he stated that such a policy violates constitutional provisions that prohibit unequal treatment of citizens based on their social or economic background. According to him, extending funding and support to both public and private institutions would promote equity and strengthen the country’s higher education sector.
