The University of Ibadan Central Students’ Disciplinary Committee has suspended two students, Ayodele Aduwo and Mide Gbadegesin, for a period of four semesters each, following their involvement in raising placards against the 2024 school fee hike.
On Thursday, FIJ reported that the UI SDC summoned the students to a second separate interrogation session on Monday.
The first session, the two said, showed that the disciplinary body had already made up its mind but was only questioning them for formalities.
Gbadegesin is a 700-level postgraduate student of African Studies, while Aduwo is a 400-level undergraduate student of History.
From the video FIJ obtained, the two students and Nice Linus only raised placards peacefully during the inauguration event of the UI Students Union executives.
Before this suspension, UI had harassed them with the police on many occasions. During the protest, the security operatives known as Operation Burst whisked them away. After seeing video evidence, the outfit said it was misled by UI authorities to believe that what was going on was a violent cult clash.
On another occasion, the school arrested Aduwo with the Criminal Investigative Department at Iyaganku, Ibadan, for flouting the school’s order for students to vacate the campus.
Linus could not be served with an SDC summons. So, no official verdict has been passed on her except for her position in the UI students’ union leadership, which the school revoked.
