Universitas Indonesia and The University of Queensland Launch Centre to Accelerate Research, Innovation and Engagement
The University of Queensland (UQ), Australia, and Universitas Indonesia (UI) have officially inaugurated the UI-UQ Collaboration Centre at UI’s Science Techno Park in Depok, Jawa Barat, aiming to deepen academic exchange and accelerate research, innovation, and regional engagement.
The launch was formalised by UQ Vice-Chancellor Prof Deborah Terry AC and UI Rector Prof Heri Hermansyah.
The centre will initially focus on priority areas aligned with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including energy transition, inclusive innovation, climate resilience, societal transformation, and health. Terry highlighted that the collaboration addresses critical global and regional challenges while providing a dynamic platform for academic exchange.
Hermansyah emphasised that the partnership, now celebrating its 25th anniversary, has evolved into a robust ecosystem of research, learning, and cross-border collaboration.
The centre aims to facilitate collaborative PhD supervision, broaden student exchange programs, and strengthen access to research funding, further supporting both institutions’ commitment to innovation and societal impact.
Queensland Trade and Investment Commissioner for Indonesia, Boyd Whalan, noted that the centre strengthens bilateral ties and leverages the partnership to tackle regional challenges, including human capital development and sustainable development solutions.
Since its inception, the UQ-UI academic partnership has expanded from joint programs in Psychology and Communications to include Arts, Business, Accounting, Engineering, and Computer Science, with more than 700 students completing two years of study in Indonesia and two years in Australia.
The new centre is expected to enhance research excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and cultural immersion opportunities for students across both institutions.
Terry and Hermansyah reaffirmed their commitment to expanding the collaboration, with a focus on building capacity, fostering innovation, and sustaining a 25-year legacy of academic excellence and cross-border cooperation.
