UNICAL Cleared of Quota Breach by NUC

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has confirmed that the University of Calabar (UNICAL) did not break any rules regarding student admission quotas. This follows recent sanctions by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) over alleged quota violations.

During an online meeting organised by the Education Writers’ Association of Nigeria, NUC’s Deputy Director of Academic Planning, Nte Bisong, said only NUC has the power to set quotas and approve academic programmes in universities—not professional bodies like MDCN.

He explained that UNICAL’s Dentistry programme has adequately grown over the years. It moved from a department in the Faculty of Medicine to a full Faculty of Dentistry in 2015, which supports an increase in student numbers. Bisong added that the education minister has stepped in, and talks are ongoing to settle the matter. He also warned professional bodies to work with NUC before making any accreditation visits to universities.
