UNICEF Commends Plateau, Bauchi on Child Nutrition Efforts

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has praised Plateau and Bauchi States for their commitment to child nutrition and healthcare, following a visit by its Representative in Nigeria, Ms. Wafaa Saeed.

During her visit to Plateau, Saeed met Deputy Governor Josephine Piyo and members of the State Executive Council. She handed over 5,300 cartons of nutrition supplements expected to reach 15,000 children.

While commending the state’s investment in the Child Nutrition Fund, she urged the government to release pledged funds as soon as possible and expand support for locally available nutritious food, noting that nearly half of children under five remain stunted.

In Bauchi, Saeed met with Governor Bala Mohammed, who highlighted the state’s progress in healthcare and education, including the renovation of primary health centres and newborn care units.

She also visited communities where local initiatives are driving change, fathers spreading health messages on bicycles, mothers supporting one another in Mama2Mama groups, and traditional leaders championing children’s welfare. Saeed toured a nutrition facility where she met children suffering from severe acute malnutrition. “Behind every statistic is a child whose future is at risk,” she said, stressing the urgency of intervention.

She welcomed the Bauchi State Government’s release of ₦300 million to the Child Nutrition Fund, which UNICEF will match to expand lifesaving interventions
