The University of Jos (UNIJOS) has commissioned a pioneering scientific toilet facility at its Bauchi Road Campus, combining waste management technology with renewable energy and environmental sustainability.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Tanko Ishaya described the facility as a “remarkable innovation” reflecting the University’s commitment to applying technology to solve everyday problems. The project, led by Professor Ponchang Wuyep, Deputy Director of the Directorate of Basic and Advanced Studies (DBAS), aims to separate urine from faeces for efficient processing.
The facility features dual units for male and female users, disabled-friendly access, and a specialised plumbing system. Methane extracted from decomposed waste will generate biogas for cooking, while urine will be converted into fertiliser for campus tree planting.
Professor Wuyep expects the project to produce bio-fertiliser capable of growing up to 1,000 trees annually, with potential expansion across campuses to support 50,000 trees, potentially earning carbon credits.
The facility will also function as a research hub, with an MSc student assigned to monitor and analyse data. A dedicated borehole ensures a steady water supply, and safety measures are included in the design.
Professor Ishaya praised the DBAS team for their ingenuity, affirming UNIJOS’ support for innovative projects that advance sustainability, renewable energy, and research-led solutions.
