Professor Pic Charles Onwochei, elected as new Deputy VC (Administration), UNIJOS
The University of Jos (UNIJOS) has elected Professor Pic Charles Onwochei as its new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), the institution announced following a special Senate meeting on 2 December 2025.
The election, held during the University’s 4th Special Meeting for the 2024/2025 academic session, followed the Vice-Chancellor’s nomination of two candidates: Professor Onwochei and Professor Ishmael Ogboru.
Professor Ogboru voluntarily withdrew his candidacy, paving the way for the unanimous approval of Professor Onwochei, whose appointment will run for a renewable two-year term, pending confirmation by the University’s Governing Council.
Professor Onwochei, from Aniocha North Local Government Area in Delta State, is a seasoned scholar in Religion and Philosophy with expertise in Ethics. He has held several key academic and administrative roles, including Head of the Department of Religion and Philosophy and Director of the Directorate of Basic and Advanced Studies (DBAS) at UNIJOS.
The Vice-Chancellor, who chaired the Senate meeting, described the appointment as a “strategic step towards strengthening the University’s administrative and academic governance.”
Professor Onwochei, married to Dr Modupe Onwochei, expressed gratitude to colleagues and promised to “serve the University with integrity, diligence, and a commitment to fostering academic excellence.”
