A viral photograph of some newly admitted students at the Federal University of Lafia (UNILAFIA) kneeling before a lecturer just to be allowed into the class has ignited intense reactions online.
The picture, first posted in a Facebook group connected to the school, shows the students at the door of a lecture hall, pleading for entry. Although the exact reason for their stop has not been confirmed, many say the students are 100-level freshmen still trying to find their footing on campus.
Reactions on social media have been sharply divided. Some Nigerians dismissed the action as “secondary school mentality,” accusing the students of being overzealous. Others defended them, saying it was a show of respect and a sign of their eagerness not to miss lectures, especially at the start of their academic journey.
The incident has once again thrown up broader concerns about how young Nigerians transition from the strict rules of secondary schools to the more independent lifestyle in universities.
