UNILAG Celebrates Student-Athletes’ Global Chess Wins

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has commended its student-athletes for bringing pride to the institution through recent achievements in chess and international sports selection. The recognition came during a courtesy visit to the University Management, led by the Chairman of the UNILAG Sports Council, Prof. Alabi Soneye, on Thursday, July 3, 2025. The team included coaches and officials from the Sports Centre.

Among those presented were members of the UNILAG Chess Team, who emerged champions at the 2025 EcoBank Chess Competition for the second year running, clinching a ₦1 million prize. Also introduced were three students selected to represent Nigeria at the forthcoming FISU World University Games in Germany, where they will compete in Judo and Badminton. Receiving the delegation on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics and Research), Prof. Bola Oboh, congratulated the students for their dedication and urged them to remain focused as ambassadors of the university. “We are proud of your success. This is what we stand for at UNILAG — excellence in all fields,” she said. The visit ended with the presentation of the chess trophy and a group photograph with university officials.
