UNILAG Don Laments Poor Research Funding

Professor Chris Obisi of the University of Lagos has criticised the poor state of research funding in Nigerian universities, warning that it is crippling innovation and academic progress.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, the Employment Relations and Human Resource Management expert said that many valuable research findings are being wasted because industries fail to invest in them.

Obisi expressed disappointment that while companies spend massive amounts sponsoring entertainment shows like Big Brother Naija, they neglect to support research that could drive national development.

He emphasised the need for stronger collaboration between Nigerian universities and industries. He added that businesses should fund research that can provide practical solutions to economic and social challenges.

According to him, Nigeria cannot advance without a deliberate commitment to research, as universities remain central to knowledge creation and innovation. He urged the government and the private sector to take urgent steps to bridge the funding gap.
