UNILAG Hosts Alumnus on Health Innovation

UNILAG Faculty of Life Sciences Hosts Alumnus, Dr Obidimma Ezezika, from Canadian Varsity

The Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Lagos hosted alumnus Dr Obidimma Ezezika, now an Associate Professor at Western University, Canada, for a multi-stakeholder engagement to inspire students and faculty.
Dr Ezezika, a 2000 graduate of UNILAG’s Department of Microbiology, delivered a keynote lecture titled Scaling Up Health Innovations in Africa: From Lab to Village at LT 026.

He reflected on his academic journey from UNILAG to pursuing a PhD in Petroleum Microbiology at the University of Georgia and a Master’s in Environmental Management from Yale University. Dr Ezezika emphasised leadership, trust, partnerships, and adaptive learning as key to translating scientific breakthroughs into tangible societal impact.

The Dean, Professor Ganiyu Oyetibo, welcomed the visit, noting its potential to motivate both students and faculty. Emeritus Professor Olukayode Amund highlighted the value of alumni engagement in enriching the student experience.

The programme included a dialogue on global health careers, leadership development, and student research pathways, where Dr Ezezika encouraged participants to prioritise experience and resilience over grades alone. The day concluded with a strategic roundtable exploring partnerships between Western University and UNILAG’s Faculty of Life Sciences, signalling strengthened collaboration and international engagement for research and innovation.
