The 3rd International Conference and Fair on Land and Development, and 7th Lateef Jakande Lecture held in UNILAG
The University of Lagos has convened academics, policymakers and industry experts to examine Nigeria’s deepening urban challenges and push for practical solutions to sustainable housing.
Opening the 3rd International Conference and Fair on Land and Development, which also featured the seventh Lateef Jakande Lecture, UNILAG Vice-Chancellor Professor Folasade Ogunsola said the forum was a “call to action” as rapid population growth and rural-urban migration intensify pressure on cities. She urged stronger collaboration to co-create models that deliver inclusive and climate-resilient urban development.
Speakers, including Professor Timothy Nubi, Professor Olumide Adenuga and Professor Oluwole Familoni, said the conference provides a platform to address issues such as land degradation, planning gaps and housing deficits.
Real estate expert Chudi Ubosi, delivering the lead paper, called for a comprehensive review of the Land Use Act, lamenting bureaucratic hurdles that restrict access to land and undermine development.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning, represented by Town Planner Adekunle Salami, outlined the State’s efforts to improve planning frameworks and expand infrastructure.
A panel session later centred on the ongoing demolitions in Lagos, with experts stressing the need for coordinated action that protects residents while promoting sustainable regeneration.
