UNILAG Welcomes African-American Students from A²MEND on Cultural Visit

University of Lagos Staff and Students, with student delegation from the African-American Male Education Network and Development (A²MEND)

On Friday, June 27, 2025, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) welcomed a group of African-American students from A²MEND, an organisation dedicated to African—American male education and Development. This group helps African-American students connect with Africa through education and cultural exchange.

The students were led by Professor Blessing Anyikwa, who oversees international students. They were received by Professor Muyiwa Falaiye, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Management Services at UNILAG, at the Vice-Chancellor’s office. Professor Falaiye was very happy to welcome the students. He praised their boldness for visiting Nigeria despite the bad things people sometimes say about the country. He said that this kind of visit helps bring Africans and African Americans closer together, promoting unity.

Professor Anyikwa advised the students to make the most of their time at UNILAG and explore both the educational and recreational areas on campus. She also encouraged them to stay in touch with the university on social media and expressed hope that there would be more visits like this in the future. The visiting students were chosen from 116 community colleges in California. They arrived in Nigeria on Monday, June 16, and stated that they chose UNILAG due to its strong academic reputation and vibrant student culture.

During their visit, the students toured the campus, played a friendly basketball game with UNILAG students, and interacted with student leaders. They concluded the day with a meaningful visit to Makoko, a waterfront community in Lagos, providing them with a deeper insight into local life. The visit is viewed as a significant step in fostering lasting academic and cultural connections between young Africans and African Americans. Both sides expressed interest in continued exchange and collaboration.
