The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof Wahab Egbewole, has hailed a new partnership with Resolve to Save Lives (RTSL) and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria as a significant step towards strengthening the country’s response to lead poisoning.
Speaking on November 19 while receiving an RTSL delegation led by Executive Director Nanlop Ogbureke, Prof Egbewole said the collaboration would enhance environmental safety and public health. He was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof Moji Bakare-Odunola.
The visit also marked the release of a portable X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) analyser to the University for research into lead contamination in cosmetics. The device will support an RTSL-funded study led by Dr Adewale Adeniyi, UNILORIN’s highest-ranked researcher on Scopus.
Prof Egbewole said the selection of the University underscored its reputation for applied research and national development. He commended RTSL for its commitment to reducing environmental health risks and reaffirmed Unilorin’s readiness for partnerships that promote innovation and public safety.
Mrs Ogbureke said RTSL chose Unilorin because of its strong research culture and active engagement with communities and regulatory bodies. She noted that lead poisoning remains a serious but preventable threat in Nigeria and expressed hope that the partnership would grow into long-term joint research and public health initiatives.
