UNILORIN has inaugurated its new Space Research Centre
The University of Ilorin has inaugurated its new Space Research Centre as part of activities marking the institution’s 50th anniversary. The centre aims to strengthen research and innovation in space science and technology in Nigeria.
During the ceremony at his palace, the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, called for the university to be renamed after the city’s founder, the late Islamic scholar Sheikh Alimi, citing his contributions to knowledge and scholarship. The Emir likened the proposal to universities such as Usmanu Danfodio University, Sokoto, and Bayero University, Kano, which bear the names of historic figures.
The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Wahab Egbewole, highlighted the historical role of the Emir’s family in establishing the institution, noting that the 9th Emir, Alhaji Zulukarnaini Gambari, donated land for the institution’s foundation 50 years ago.
The University’s Governing Council Chairman, Abiodun Aluko, praised the Emir for his 30-year reign and described the university as peaceful, highly sought after, and internationally respected. The week-long golden jubilee events also feature a lecture by former Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission director, Professor Patrick Lumumba, underscoring the university’s commitment to academic excellence and societal development.
