The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) have expressed deep concern over the non-payment of their April 2025 salaries, attributing the delay to the recent migration from the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) to the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS).
In a letter dated May 7, 2025, addressed to the Accountant General of the Federation, SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim lamented that since the transition to GIFMIS, university workers often receive their salaries weeks after other federal employees.
He stated that this delay violates the 2022 agreement between the unions and the Federal Government, which assured that no member would face repercussions for participating in the previous strike.
The unions also spoke on issues of salary shortfalls and inconsistencies in third-party deductions, such as cooperative contributions and professional dues, since the migration to GIFMIS.
They noted that some universities have been paying incomplete salaries and withholding deductions, actions they consider a breach of financial regulations.
Furthermore, SSANU and NASU have raised concerns over the Federal Government’s failure to release the N50 billion appropriated in the 2023 supplementary budget for earned allowances.
They urged the government to include these funds in the 2025 budget and ensure prompt disbursement to prevent further industrial unrest.
The unions have warned that continued delays and unmet agreements could lead to industrial actions, potentially disrupting federal tertiary institutions’ academic calendar and operations.
They call on the government to address these issues promptly to maintain industrial harmony in the university system.
