Tension has escalated at the Federal University, oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) following the arrest of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) Chairman, Comrade Faleye Benjamin, and four members after honouring a police invitation in Ado-Ekiti on Monday.The detained officials, Comrades Ademola Mutiu, Oyelude Yekeen, Aluko Ayomikun, and Nwokeke Barnabas, were reportedly invited in response to a petition allegedly written by the university’s Chief Security Officer (CSO) on the directive of the suspended Vice-Chancellor, Prof Abayomi Fasina.Sources within the institution described the arrest as an attempt to intimidate union members, linking it to ongoing power tussles involving the suspended Vice-Chancellor.In a statement, SSANU condemned the detention as “unlawful and unacceptable,” calling it a direct assault on workers’ rights and union freedom. The union warned that the university management would be held responsible for any harm to its members and vowed to continue lawful advocacy for fairness and justice.The development comes amid rising unrest in FUOYE following allegations that the suspended Vice-Chancellor has been interfering in university affairs despite his ongoing suspension.
