The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), on Tuesday convened senior policymakers, academics, and development partners in Enugu for its annual Policy Day, urging Nigeria to strengthen national policies on natural capital, water security, climate-smart agriculture, and food system resilience.
Organised by the Resource and Environmental Policy Research Centre – Environment for Development (REPRC-EfD Nigeria), the event featured three major studies on water scarcity, climate-smart agriculture, and the impact of armed banditry on agricultural productivity.
Represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. J. U. J. Onwumere, UNN Vice Chancellor Prof. Simon Uchenna Ortuanya emphasised the critical role of water, agriculture, and security in Nigeria’s food system.
Prof. Nnaemeka Chukwuone, Director of REPRC-EfD Nigeria, highlighted findings on households’ willingness to pay for improved water supply, gendered impacts of climate-smart agriculture on nutrition and poverty, and the effects of armed banditry on farmers.
Officials from federal and state ministries, the National Council on Climate Change, and security agencies attended, stressing the need for evidence-based policy to achieve sustainable development.
Deputy Director of the Federal Ministry of Environment, Jonah Barde, and NCCC representatives noted the urgency of climate adaptation, while stakeholders endorsed collaboration among academia, government, and communities to enhance water systems, agricultural resilience, and climate security planning in Nigeria.
