The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), reports that it now spends over N200 million per month on electricity. This was revealed by the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oguejiofor Ujam, during a press briefing for the university’s 54th convocation.
He said the rising electricity cost is affecting the school’s operations across its Nsukka, Enugu, and Ituku-Ozalla campuses. To solve this, the school is taking steps to reduce power usage and invest in solar and hybrid energy sources. Ujam explained that the move is not just about saving money, but also to ensure a steady supply of electricity for learning and research.
During the briefing, he also announced that 9,821 students will graduate this year. Out of them, 167 earned First Class degrees, while over 1,800 will receive various postgraduate awards, including PhDs and Master’s degrees. The convocation ceremony will take place at the Nsukka campus on Friday.
