The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), reports that it spends over N200 million every month on electricity across its campuses in Nsukka, Enugu, and Ituku-Ozalla.
The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oguejiofor Ujam, raised the concern during a press briefing ahead of the school’s 54th convocation. He said the high electricity cost is one of the major problems facing the university and is affecting its ability to operate smoothly. “This huge bill limits how we allocate funds and run the university,” he said.
To reduce the burden, Professor Ujam said the university is taking steps to reduce energy usage and explore cheaper power sources, such as solar and hybrid systems. The Acting Vice Chancellor added that although the steps taken by the university may not immediately reduce energy costs, they aim to ensure a steady power supply for learning and research. Staff and students were also encouraged to support the university’s energy-saving initiatives, helping the university manage its resources more effectively.
