The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has withheld the results of 192,089 students who sat for the 2025 WASSCE over suspected examination malpractice.
Dr Amos Dangut, Head of WAEC Nigeria, made this known while announcing the results in Lagos. The withheld results represent 9.75% of the total 1.97 million candidates who wrote the examination. WAEC said the malpractice involved the use of mobile phones in examination halls and collusion among students. The council has promised to apply strict sanctions against those found guilty.
In 2025, WAEC introduced a new method of serialising objective papers in key subjects like English, Maths, and Biology to stop cheating. Although this led to a drop in performance, WAEC said it encourages honest preparation. While over 1.5 million candidates got their full results, about 451,000 are still being processed. WAEC also warned that states owing examination fees will not be able to access results until debts are paid.
