The Vice-Chancellor of KolaDaisi University (KDU), Ibadan, Professor Adeniyi Olatunbosun, has stated that Artificial Intelligence (AI) must be tailored to local realities if it is to effectively serve Africa’s development needs.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the University’s fifth convocation, Olatunbosun said AI systems should be developed to reflect the peculiarities of Nigerian society and address community-specific problems. “We must make AI local so it can take care of the needs within our environment and provide solutions relevant to our own challenges,” he said.
While describing AI as a helpful tool that is transforming research and academic work, the Vice-Chancellor warned that without local content, Nigeria risks becoming dependent on foreign technologies that do not fully understand its context.
He also appealed to the Federal Government to include private universities in intervention schemes such as TETFund and NELFund, noting that both public and private institutions contribute to national development.
Ahead of the convocation, Olatunbosun announced that 203 students would graduate this year, including 12 students with First-Class honours. He also revealed that the University’s Nursing and Law programmes had received full accreditation and that KDU had established its postgraduate school to deepen research and innovation.
