Government’s Payment Claims
Resident doctors at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, and the University of Osun Teaching Hospital (UTH), Osogbo, have joined the nationwide strike declared by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD).
The strike, which began on November 1, follows what the Association described as the Federal Government’s failure to meet its long-standing demands, including a 200 per cent increase in the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS), full implementation of new allowances proposed since 2022, and immediate recruitment of clinical staff.
UCH chapter president, Dr Gboyega Ajibola, confirmed full compliance, saying all resident doctors, medical officers, and house officers had withdrawn their services. He warned that the action would severely disrupt specialist care, as resident doctors make up about 80 per cent of the hospital’s medical workforce.
In Osogbo, UTH resident doctors also suspended services in line with NARD’s directive.
The Federal Government, however, insists it is addressing the doctors’ grievances. It said ₦43.3 billion had been released to settle arrears and improve welfare, with ₦21.3 billion recently disbursed and another ₦12 billion expected within days.
Talks between NARD leaders and the Ministry of Health are expected to continue in Abuja.
