The Vice-Chancellor of Wigwe University, Professor Marwan Al-Akaidi, has called on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to partner with the institution in strengthening education across the region. He appealed during a courtesy visit to NDDC Managing Director, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, at the commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt on August 13.
Professor Al-Akaidi said the university, founded by the late Herbert Wigwe, aims to rank among Africa’s leading institutions by producing graduates who are innovators and entrepreneurs. He urged the commission to support scholarships for Niger Delta students, improve infrastructure around the university, and provide resources such as solar electrification and water facilities.
Responding, Dr Ogbuku commended the university’s facilities and pledged the NDDC’s commitment to collaboration. He said the commission was ready to include Wigwe University among host institutions for its scholarship programme, ensuring more students could access world-class education locally rather than abroad.
Other NDDC officials praised Wigwe’s philanthropic legacy, describing a partnership with the university as a way of honouring his vision. Ambassador Idaere Ogan Gogo added that the initiative would enable more Niger Delta youths to benefit from the institution’s offerings.
