The Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC) has called for stronger leadership standards in Nigerian universities, stressing that only proven managers should be appointed as vice-chancellors and members of governing councils.
Speaking at the second Distinguished Personality Lecture of Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo, FCSC Chairman Prof. Tunji Olaopa said higher education governance required more than academic credentials. He argued that modern universities need leaders with strategic, financial, and managerial expertise to cope with global competition, funding pressures, and institutional growth.
Olaopa cited examples from Nigeria’s university system dating back to 1967, when leadership choices considered both academic and managerial competence. He noted that world-class institutions increasingly appoint presidents from outside traditional academic circles, reflecting the growing complexity of higher education management. He praised Vice-Chancellor Prof. Olanrewaju Olaniyan for successfully steering Emmanuel Alayande University through its transition from a college of education, describing his leadership as a model of smooth academic and administrative integration.
According to Olaopa, future appointments must prioritise leaders with capacity in fundraising, strategic planning, partnerships, and innovation, while safeguarding academic freedom. “Universities today require visionary CEOs who can balance scholarship with managerial excellence,” he said.
