Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi, has claimed two top prizes at the 2025 Enactus Nigeria National Competition, which showcased innovations in clean energy and Sustainability among students from more than 33 universities.
The university won the Battery Innovation Challenge with ENERGIV, a technology that converts plastic waste into carbon nanotubes to improve lithium-ion batteries, boosting conductivity and lifespan. Ahmadu Bello University finished second with Cell Matrix, a machine learning-driven battery management system, while Kaduna Polytechnic placed third with SmartVolt, an adaptive charging algorithm that cuts energy waste. The winners received cash prizes of €2,000, €1,500 and €1,000 respectively, sponsored by Schneider Electric.
JoSTUM also emerged as the National Champion in the Enactus Core Programme with BettaCoal Energies, a start-up offering smokeless briquettes, an improved air-circulating stove and biodegradable food containers. The initiative addresses local cooking and packaging needs while promoting environmental Sustainability. As national champion, the team will represent Nigeria at the Enactus World Cup in Bangkok this September.
The competition, organised by Schneider Electric in partnership with Enactus, is part of a broader commitment to train one million young people by 2025. Country President of Schneider Electric Nigeria, Ajibola Akindele, said the initiative demonstrates how young innovators are solving real problems: “Our role is to support and empower them to do so on a bigger scale.”
Enactus Nigeria Country Director, Michael Ajayi, described the projects as proof of the potential of youth-led innovation to drive sustainable solutions and build capacity for the future.
