Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) is on track for an upgrade to university status, the institution’s Rector, Dr Ibraheem Abdul, has confirmed. Speaking on Friday ahead of the college’s 37th convocation ceremony, Abdul said the National Assembly and the Presidency are finalising outstanding issues in the transition process.
Abdul assured that YABATECH had fulfilled all the requirements, including presenting the proposal to lawmakers. “We have over 200 doctoral holders among our staff and the facilities to operate as a university. We are praying and hoping it becomes a reality soon,” he said.
The convocation will see 8,654 students graduate at National Diploma and Higher National Diploma levels, including 291 with distinctions. Ani Faith Ada of the Department of Office Technology Management emerged as the best graduating student with a CGPA of 3.90 out of 4.0.
Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, Senate Majority Leader, will deliver the convocation lecture on “Entrepreneurship Development in the Digital Age: Leveraging Technology for Job Creation and Economic Growth.” Professor Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, will chair the event.
The ceremony will also confer the YABATECH Fellowship Award on three notable Nigerians—Senators Bamidele and Yayi, and BUA Group CEO Abdul-Samad Isyaku Rabiu—for their contributions to Nigeria’s digital and economic sectors.
