Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has approved a ₦300,000 stipend for the parents of 90 students in Gajiganna town to boost school enrollment in the insurgency-hit area.
The town, with a population of 50,000, currently has only 90 students enrolled in secondary school. To encourage education, Zulum directed that each father receive ₦250,000 and each mother ₦50,000. He also approved ₦50,000 per student to support their basic needs.
The governor announced the measures on Friday while inaugurating a Higher Islamic College in Gajiganna. He further ordered free meals for students in schools with low enrollment across northern Borno.
Zulum stressed that the region lags in education and requires deliberate interventions. The governor explained that the new college has been planned to blend Islamic learning with Science, Mathematics, Technology, and English to equip students with modern skills.
The educational initiative is part of efforts to restore education in areas severely affected by more than a decade of insurgency.
