The Executive Chairman of the Katsina State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr Kabir Gafiya, has stated that the state is deploying 20,000 digital tablets as part of its efforts to combat learning poverty and modernise education delivery.
In an interview with PUNCH, Gafiya explained that insecurity has disrupted schooling in many communities across the state. However, SUBEB is working with stakeholders to ensure learning continues safely and sustainably.
He noted that the state government has adopted a Safe School Policy, supervised by the Ministry of Internal Security, to protect children and teachers in conflict-prone areas. “Civil Defence Corps and Mobile Police officers are deployed to guard schools in vulnerable areas, while in some cases, schools are relocated to safer zones so pupils are not denied education,” he said.
Beyond security, the SUBEB chairman emphasised the role of technology in sustaining learning. He said the distribution of tablets and other digital learning tools is aimed at keeping education on track despite disruptions and at sparking greater interest among children.
According to him, the integration of technology represents a deliberate reform strategy to not only address immediate challenges but also to prepare Katsina pupils for the demands of the modern world.
