The process of appointing a substantive Vice Chancellor for Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, has been thrown into controversy following a series of petitions challenging the names of three candidates recommended by the Governing Council.
The selection began after Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, inaugurated a new council led by Chief Dan Orbih in 2024.
Following advertisements in national dailies and interviews for vacant management positions, the council recommended three professors for the vice chancellorship: Frederick Ugbesia Igene (Animal Nutrition and Biochemistry), Marshall Aregboje Azeke (Biochemistry), and Sunday Olowo Samuel (Medical Microbiology).
A letter dated April 29, 2025, formally submitted the shortlisted names to the governor. However, petitions soon emerged, mostly against Igene and Azeke. The flood of objections prompted the state government to direct the council to review the process, despite commending its transparency.
University spokesman, Otunba Michael Aladenika, cautioned against misinformation, noting that social media criticisms were designed to stoke tension. “The process of appointing a substantive Vice Chancellor is a nuanced exercise, prioritising competence and ability to drive the Visitor’s vision,” he said.
Dissatisfied groups have reportedly pushed for the cancellation of the process in favour of Prof Eunice Omonzejie of the Faculty of Arts. Nevertheless, Orbih and the council have resisted ethnic and political pressures.
Meanwhile, the university has made progress under the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olowo, and the Orbih-led council, including the restoration of TETFund access, new infrastructure approvals, promotions, and improved staff welfare.
