Prof Abdalla Uba Adamu, former Vice Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), holds the rare distinction of earning two professorial chairs in different disciplines, making him Nigeria’s first “double professor.”
Adamu was first appointed Professor of Science Education and Comparative Higher Education at Bayero University, Kano (BUK), in 1997.
He later became Professor of Media and Cultural Communication in 2012 after his work on Hausa literature, film, and music gained international recognition. His two inaugural lectures were delivered a decade apart, in 2004 and 2014, respectively.
Born in 1956, Adamu began his career at BUK in 1980 as a Graduate Assistant. He earned a DPhil from the University of Sussex, UK, and completed a Fulbright residency at the University of California, Berkeley. His research has bridged education, media, literature, and cultural studies, establishing him as a leading figure in African scholarship.
Adamu is a member of both the Nigerian Academy of Education (MNAE) and the Nigerian Academy of Letters (MNAL), a rare academic crossover. Internationally, he is recognised for pioneering research into Hausa popular culture and its intersections with education and media.
