The Adamawa State Government has pledged to sustain Global Partnership for Education (GPE)-funded projects aimed at reducing the number of out-of-school children in the state.
The GPE initiative, implemented by UNICEF, has provided accelerated learning programmes for 12,000 children across Adamawa over the past year.
Speaking at the project’s closing ceremony in Yola on Friday, the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr Garba Pella, said the state had made provisions for the project’s continuation in the 2026 budget. He was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Aishatu Umar. Pella praised UNICEF and other partners for their support in strengthening education in Adamawa, noting that funding for sustainability would not be a challenge.
UNICEF Education Specialist AbdulRahaman Ado said the project, which ran from April 2024 to September 2025, was implemented in the Gombi, Lamurde, and Madagali Local Government Areas. He explained that its objective was to ensure safe and inclusive learning for children in conflict-affected states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe.
Facilitators and beneficiaries described the project as transformative, with pupils such as 15-year-old Sani Yahaya and 12-year-old Bilkisu Umar expressing gratitude for gaining access to education, some for the first time.
