Adeyemi Federal University of Education in Ondo State has appointed Professor Bayode Isaiah Popoola as its first substantive Vice Chancellor.
The Governing Council of the university, recently upgraded to a federal institution, announced the appointment after its meeting in Ondo.
Popoola, 62, is a professor of Guidance and Counselling at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, where he has served as head of department, deputy provost of the postgraduate college and dean of the Faculty of Education. He has also worked as a consultant to UNICEF, the International Organisation for Migration and Nigeria’s Ministry of Education.
He has published widely in local and international journals, supervised dozens of postgraduate theses, and is a member of several professional bodies, including the Counselling Association of Nigeria and the American Psychological Association.
The new vice chancellor, from Ikere Ekiti in Ekiti State, studied at Ondo State University (now Ekiti State University) and holds advanced degrees from OAU.
His appointment has drawn commendations from education stakeholders, including Prof Sir Bashiru Aremu, Africa Chairman of the Unity of Nations Actions for Climate Change Council, who described it as “timely”.
