Africa has been urged to develop a stronger, future-ready health system that meets the needs, culture, and requirements of its people. Professor Claire Nelson from the Global Public Health University (GPHU) made this statement during the launch of GPHU’s “Faculty for the Future” initiative in Lagos. She warned that Africa should not copy foreign models, but rather develop its path using local knowledge, including traditional medicine.
Nelson, a Jamaican expert, stressed that with 70% of Africans under 30, there is no time to waste. She called for a digital, inclusive, and resilient health system. She also cautioned against relying too heavily on new technologies, such as AI and blockchain, without proper legal and ethical guidelines. GPHU’s leader, Dr Bisi Bright, said the new faculty is part of their mission to train health leaders in Africa. She urged Nigerians to embrace digital health tools to stay ready for the future.
