Airtel Nigeria’s intervention at Oremeji Primary School 2 in Ajegunle, Lagos, has been highlighted as a model for education development, leading to a broader plan by Airtel Africa Foundation to adopt more schools across the continent.
In 2010, Airtel rebuilt the collapsed Oremeji school after discovering children learning under trees and in unsafe classrooms. The company delivered six classrooms, an office, toilets, a borehole, power supply, and learning materials, while also providing pupils with uniforms, shoes, and bags. Later, an ICT lab, library, and mentorship sessions were added through employee volunteer programmes.
The project improved enrollment and academic performance, while also inspiring the Lagos State Government to rehabilitate other schools in the Tolu Complex. Over time, the area was transformed with modern school blocks.
During a recent visit, Airtel Africa’s Group Vice President for Corporate Communications and CSR, Emeka Oparah, stated that the initiative demonstrated how corporate partnerships can drive sustainable development in education.
He disclosed that Airtel Africa Foundation will adopt over 100 schools across 14 African markets, including 10 in Nigeria, within the next 12 months.
