Amnesty International has asked the University of Ibadan (UI) to cancel the suspension of three students who protested a school fee increase. The human rights group stated that the students were merely exercising their rights by holding placards last year.
In a letter signed by Amnesty Nigeria’s Director, Isa Sanusi, the group stated that the university’s action violates the students’ rights to education, freedom of expression, and peaceful assembly.Two students, Ayodele Aduwo and Mide Gbadegesin, were suspended for four semesters. The third student, Nice Linus, is still under investigation.
UI claimed the students disrupted a student union event on May 13, 2024. Nevertheless, the students insist they only held signs reading “FEE MUST FALL” without causing any trouble. Amnesty said peaceful protest is a right protected by the Nigerian Constitution and asked the university to stop punishing students for speaking out.
