Students of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, have condemned the institution’s governing council’s newly approved dress code, describing it as a violation of their constitutional rights.
The council has signed that students with dreadlocks, crop tops, off-shoulder clothing, coloured hairstyles, and sagging trousers will be rusticated. In the statement released by the school’s student union leaders on Thursday, July 24, 2025, they said, “We remain committed to protecting our rights.”
According to the students, “The introduction of sanctions such as rustication for perceived ‘misconducts’ stifles and violates students’ fundamental rights to freedom of expression, personal style, and individuality.”
