The Plateau State House of Assembly has barred schools from forcing parents to buy new textbooks each academic year and condemned elaborate graduation ceremonies in nursery and primary schools.
The resolution followed a motion by Joseph Bukar, representing Shendam Constituency, and seconded by Mathew Kwarpo Sylvanus of Mangu South.
Bukar told the Assembly that parents were under mounting financial strain from schools insisting on annual textbook purchases. He argued that families wanted affordability and fairness, not unnecessary costs, and called for a sustainable textbook policy to ease the burden.
Lawmakers unanimously agreed, ruling that parents should be free to reuse textbooks and buy them from vendors of their choice. They also criticised ostentatious graduation events for young children, describing them as exploitative.
The decision is part of broader concerns about the rising cost of education across Nigeria, where parents frequently complain of hidden school charges and mounting financial pressures.
