The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) has stated that Nigeria’s troubled education sector can only be revived through stronger collaboration among teachers, governments, parents, and the community.
Speaking ahead of the 2025 World Teachers’ Day, ASUSS National President, Sola Adigun, explained that this year’s theme, “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession,” highlights the urgent need for unity in addressing the nation’s learning crisis.
He emphasised that teaching is not a job for lone rangers, as the success of a child depends on the collective effort of teachers, parents, policymakers, and society as a whole. “True collaboration gives teachers a voice in shaping the future of education,” Adigun said.
The ASUSS leader also commended the Federal Ministry of Education for giving the union a seat on the expanded Governing Council of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN). He further praised the tuition-free Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) scheme, calling it a good example of policy and practice working together.
