The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) has criticised state governors who have refused to implement the harmonised retirement age for teachers, saying the neglect is discouraging.
ASUSS National President, Sola Adigun, in a statement on Friday, revealed that about 16 states are yet to adopt the policy, which sets the retirement age of teachers at 65 years or 40 years of pensionable service.
Late President Muhammadu Buhari first announced the policy during World Teachers’ Day in 2020. It later received approval from the Federal Executive Council in January 2021, before being passed to the National Assembly in June of the same year.
Adigun noted that teachers in affected states feel cheated compared to their colleagues where the law has been implemented. He urged governors to align with the federal policy, stressing that ignoring it undermines teachers’ morale and the government’s promise to prioritise education as the bedrock of national development.
