Yobe State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commenced an indefinite industrial action over demands for entitlements and autonomy from the state government.
The strike was announced after a closed-door meeting, during which the ASUU branch Chairman, Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim Karage, briefed journalists on the decision. He explained that the demands include the union’s demand for the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage and consequential adjustments for all staff, as well as appropriate promotion placement and yearly increments for staff, with payment of arrears for annual increments, the 2019 minimum wage consequential adjustment, and promotion arrears from 2018 to 2024.
According to him, others are paid for PG facilitation allowances and other statutory entitlements. The union chairman stated that despite repeated reminders and patient waiting, the government has not responded meaningfully to their demands. The situation has led to a loss of morale among academic staff, severely impacting their ability to function effectively.
