Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to establishing a State-owned University of Education. He gave the assurance during a recent meeting with a delegation from the Alumni Association of the Niger State College of Education, led by its National President, Dr Aminu Yusuf. The governor acknowledged the challenges of space but maintained that efforts are ongoing to realise the vision.
Governor Bago congratulated the college, its founders, and the student body as the institution approaches its 50th anniversary. He pledged continued support to ensure its sustained growth and relevance.
Responding to the Alumni Association’s proposal to rename the college as Umar Sanda Ahmadu College of Education, the governor stated that the request would be tabled for consideration by the State Executive Council. He also assured that other appeals within the state’s jurisdiction would be given due attention.
In his remarks, Dr Aminu Yusuf commended the governor’s developmental strides and described him as a man of wisdom and wide community acceptance. He formally invited Governor Bago to the college’s 50th anniversary celebrations, scheduled for the 4th and 5th of July 2025.
Dr Yusuf described the institution as a beacon of academic excellence and community service since its inception. He called for the governor’s support in several areas, including the proposed renaming, endorsement of a dual mandate bill passed by the Niger State House of Assembly, and the allocation of sponsorship slots for medical-related courses for students of the college.
Also speaking, Dr Usman Bokani Ahmed, the college’s first Provost and one of its founding members, advocated for the acquisition of a new site for the institution. He underscored the historical importance of the college as the state’s first tertiary institution.
