Police in Bayelsa State have paraded three students of the Federal University Otuoke accused of assaulting fellow student Nancy Wilfred in an attack that sparked nationwide outrage after footage went viral.
The suspects, identified as 20-year-old Kadi Daniel, Miracle, and Becky, were presented at police headquarters in Yenagoa on Thursday. A fourth suspect, Favour, is still being sought.
Nancy was allegedly lured to a residence, beaten, stripped naked, stepped on, and filmed by her assailants. Police say the attack stemmed from accusations that she had accused one of the students of using charms to attract men.
Daniel admitted to taking part in the assault, saying she acted under the influence of alcohol and peer pressure. Miracle told investigators she deceived Nancy into visiting the house, citing unresolved disputes.
Bayelsa Commissioner of Police, Francis Idu, said the suspects are under investigation for conspiracy to commit murder, abduction, and cyberbullying. He vowed that the matter would be pursued vigorously in court.
The case has drawn sharp condemnation from civil society groups, the Nigerian Bar Association, and women’s rights organisations, with widespread calls for swift prosecution.
