Nigeria’s fight against insecurity cannot be won with weapons alone but requires discipline, civic responsibility and resilience among citizens, the head of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has warned.
Retired Brigadier-General Buba Marwa stated that the country risked remaining vulnerable if its citizens lacked character and a sense of duty. Speaking in Abuja at a gathering of Nigerian Military School alumni, he argued that national security depended as much on values as on military strength.
“Our country today needs more than soldiers with weapons. She needs citizens with courage, loyalty, discipline and resilience,” Marwa said.
Leadership expert Fela Durotoye, who also addressed the event, urged Nigerians to emulate Africa’s liberation leaders of the 1940s, stressing that conviction and principles can be more potent than arms in shaping history.
Marwa’s comments come amid ongoing security challenges across Nigeria, including armed banditry, insurgency, and communal clashes that have left thousands dead and displaced.
