The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted a provisional licence to establish the Benue State University of Agriculture, Science and Technology (BUSAST) in Ihugh, Vandeikya Local Government Area.
This development makes BUSAST the second public university owned by the Benue State Government and the 68th state-owned university in Nigeria.
The licence was officially presented on Wednesday in Abuja by the NUC Executive Secretary, Professor Abdullahi Ribadu, to the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, represented by his deputy, Samuel Ode.
With this addition, Nigeria’s total number of universities has risen to 299.
The establishment of BUSAST follows the passage of a bill by the Benue State House of Assembly in December 2024, creating the institution with the aim of enhancing educational opportunities and driving economic growth through agricultural innovation.
Governor Alia has stated that the university’s role is to produce specialised graduates, enhance food security, and boost the local economy.
The NUC has indicated that BUSAST will undergo a resource verification process to assess its readiness regarding facilities, infrastructure, human capital, and resources before commencing academic programmes.
The university is expected to adhere strictly to guidelines for quality assurance, character development, and overall management of academic programmes.
