Bayero University Kano (BUK) has insisted that literacy is a key driver of empowerment and inclusive education, describing it as the foundation for sustainable community development.
Vice Chancellor, Prof Haruna Musa, made the remarks during the institution’s 2025 International Literacy Day celebration, which also featured the induction of Prof Fatima Muhammad Umar into the university’s Hall of Fame. Professor Musa noted that literacy goes beyond reading and writing, stressing that it opens doors for individuals and communities to thrive.
He praised the Department of Continuing Education for introducing adult literacy classes for junior staff and neighbouring communities, which he described as a milestone in BUK’s commitment to lifelong learning.
He further pledged the university’s dedication to promoting literacy, second-chance education, and lifelong learning, particularly for women and marginalised groups, through partnerships with government, civil society, and local leaders.
