Bayero University, Kano (BUK), recently rolled out the drums to celebrate its outgoing Vice Chancellor, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas. The lavish send-off was described as a fitting tribute to what many staff have described as a historic and transformative five-year tenure.
At a farewell ceremony on August 16, 2025, speakers praised Prof. Abbas for lifting the university’s profile both nationally and internationally. Registrar Malam Haruna Aliyu noted that BUK, once ranked outside the top 60 universities in Nigeria, rose to fourth place within two years of his leadership. The university also achieved global recognition when the Times Higher Education of London ranked it first in Nigeria for international visibility. Prof. Abbas was also credited with resolving a decades-long land dispute with the Danzakara community, securing a grant and certificate of occupancy for BUK.
Other speakers, including Dr. Kabir Dahiru Abbas and Professor Hajara Umar Sanda, hailed him as a man of integrity who guided the university through the COVID-19 pandemic and strikes while still recording major successes.
