Otunba Adetunji Oyebanji, President and Chairman, Chartered Institute of Directors (CIoD) Nigeria
The Chartered Institute of Directors (CIoD) Nigeria has emphasised the critical importance of corporate reputation, ethical leadership, and strong governance structures in today’s volatile business environment.
At its December induction ceremony, themed “Leadership, Governance and Resilience: Strengthening Corporate Reputation in Times of Crisis,” the Institute inducted 334 new members and upgraded 10 existing members. CIoD President and Chairman, Otunba Adetunji Oyebanji, noted that crises ranging from economic shocks to cyber threats have become part of the new normal, making reputation management a key leadership responsibility.
Oyebanji urged directors and executives to anticipate risks, implement robust governance systems, and respond transparently to maintain trust.
“You must take up your mantle with humility and courage, commit to learning, lead with character, and build resilient boards,” he said, stressing that effective governance ensures clarity of roles, accountability, and oversight.
Former Group Managing Director of First Holdco Plc, Nnamdi Okonkwo, highlighted the need for scenario planning in the VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, Ambiguity) era, identifying financial, reputational, operational, cybersecurity, and leadership crises as key threats.
He advised directors to set the tone at the top, engage stakeholders, reinforce accountability, and develop resilient systems that can withstand disruptions.
