A circular from the Edo State Secondary Education Board (SSEB) has directed teachers in senior secondary schools to clear grass and clean school premises ahead of resumption, despite government claims that no such order was given.
The memo, dated August 27 and signed by Obarisiagbon M.I. on behalf of SSEB chair Dr Maureen Ekhorangbon, instructed principals to ensure teachers carry out the exercise on September 1, with students joining on September 8.
“This exercise is to keep our environment clean, hygienic, safe, and to inculcate discipline and voluntary service into our students,” the circular stated. Principals were also told to supervise the work and submit photographic evidence of compliance to the board’s “integrity WhatsApp page” by September 5.
The Ministry of Education had earlier dismissed reports of compulsory grass-cutting as “unfounded”, saying any such activity by teachers was voluntary. Schools in Edo are scheduled to reopen for the 2025/2026 academic session on Monday.
