Police in Cross River State have arrested a junior secondary school student accused of killing a 23-year-old man during a fight at Ugboro Secondary School in Bekwara Local Government Area.
The incident occurred on Tuesday after two students began fighting at the close of school. Witnesses said the victim, identified as Oshen, intervened to separate them when one of the boys, Ogbeche, accused him of taking sides.
According to eyewitness Lizzy, the student left the scuffle, picked up a heavy wooden pestle used for pounding food, and struck Oshen on the head. “People were shouting, asking him to drop it, but he did not listen,” she said. “He went ahead to hit Oshen. The pestles here are very heavy, that was why they could inflict severe damage.” Oshen was taken to a hospital in Ogoja but died later that night.
Residents said Ogbeche was known for violent behaviour and had previously attacked classmates with machetes. Police confirmed the boy has been taken into custody and is being held in Ogoja prison.
